  1. DesignSessions Video Tutorial: Gesture Drawing

This is a sessions video tutorial- Gesture drawing. Lesson 3- Lets explore how to do gesture drawing.

This is a very fast and fluid approach that will help you develop your drawing technique. Here I’m going to use gesture drawing to represent this fan in my studio. When you are starting your drawing, start in the middle and work outwards. Work in quick fluid strokes. You can start light but use darker strokes when you get confidence that you’re on the right track. Here I started using elliptical shapes to capture the shapes of the fan’s blades. Don’t use an eraser in ester drawing. The whole point is to be bold and aggressive and instinctive. You can’t stop though. You must get into the habit of continuously checking your drawing against what your eyes see. You can use light and dark strokes to capture the mass of the object. Think about laying paint on a canvas or clay on a sculpture to capture the parts of the objects that have the greatest mass. This is a great way to get a feel of the concept of value in drawing. A few minutes later I’m almost done with my gesture drawing.

I’ve explored the mass of the fan and its essential shapes. Doing a gesture drawing is a great preparation for drawing or painting an object that I want to represent with a more traditional approach later or you might do a series of gesture drawings as quick warm ups or practice exercises. Here is the final project. Whether or not it’s ready for the gallery, it’s got my creative genius flowing and giving me some good ideas for representing this fan down the line.
